Ueli joined Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York, USA, to set up his laboratory working on plant reproductive biology, first as a Cold Spring Harbor Fellow and then as a Senior Staff Investigator. In 1999, he returned to Switzerland joining the Friedrich Miescher Institute in Basel as a Staff Scientist before he was appointed Professor of Plant Developmental Biology at the University of Zurich in 2000. His interest in plant reproduction concerns both sexual and asexual (apomictic) processes. The Grossniklaus lab focuses on the genetic analysis of female gametophyte development and the study maternal effects on seed development. The main areas which are being addressed are of importance both for elucidating basic processes in developmental biology and the long term goal of engineering apomixis in sexual crop plants.
