Building blocks of a great team

July 24th, 2023

Just like the satisfying click of Lego blocks connecting, our Autonomous Sensors FSP team have connected for the first time in Hahndorf to build connections and ideas.

Team AS FSP has grown. In addition to our talented Theme Leaders and our Sensor Prototyping Hub Leader, we have 15 project leaders drawn from a talent pool across ten business units.

And then there’s more. Each project leader is supported by a CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Scientist, with some starting only days before our first meeting.

“Our CERCs are an incredibly smart and diverse group of post-docs that are already producing excellent scientific outputs,” says Director of the AS FSP, Yulia Uvarova.

You may think these are exaggerated claims of our talent, but we put our teams to the test during a Lego Masters style challenge to invent a prototype to solve a specific problem of their choosing.

Worthy contenders tackled challenges like teleporting and long distance flying or creating devices to deploy within the aged care sector.

But the crowd favourite was a dedicated drone style device designed to take the drudgery out of folding the end of the toilet paper roll. This promises to revolutionise hotel housekeeping services worldwide.

Simone Janney, Program Manager for the AS FSP, was energised by the three days of team building.

“I was so amazed at the energy and brain power in the room,” Simone said.

“Everyone that has come to the AS FSP conference has contributed enormously during the time we have been in Hahndorf and it’s going to be an exciting time seeing where the science takes us.”
