Temperature

Temperature was measured with a water quality probe (Hydrolab Multimeter).

Bottom depth

Bottom depth was determined through a deep sounder on the boat used for sample collection.

Nutrients analysis

Analysed through Australian Laboratory Services (ALS) environmental testing https://www.alsglobal.com/en-au/

Total organic Carbon

ALS standard method EP003 (TOC)

Dried and pulverised sample is reacted with acid to remove inorganic Carbonates, then combusted in a LECO furnace in the presence of strong oxidants / catalysts. The evolved (Organic) Carbon (as CO2) is automatically measured by infra-red detector.

Total Nitrogen

ALS standard method EK062G (TN)

Total nitrogen as N (TKN+NOx) by discrete analyser (APHA 21st Ed, 4500 Norg/NO3)

Total phosphorus

ALS standard method EK067G (TP)

TP by discrete analyser (APHA 21st Ed, 4500 P-B&F)

Organic matter content

Organic matter content was determined using the Loss-on-ignition method.

Percentage of sediment organic carbon was measured by loss on ignition (LOI) method. Samples were initially dried at 105 °C for 12 h to remove moisture and then organic matter burned in the muffle furnace at 500 °C for 12 h (Wang et al., 2011).
