The close dates for both these positions will be extended until the 26th November, get your applications in soon!

The Opportunity

  • Join the world-class farming systems research program at CSIRO
  • Contribute to developing more environmentally sustainable farming systems in Australia and internationally
  • Lead and collaborate with industry, government, and the community to make a real-world difference

Research Scientist, Digital spatial platform development for durable pest management (4 years)

This role will contribute to the development, refinement, and eventual adoption of new digital tools to manage the risk of pest outbreaks in Australian agricultural landscapes. The Research Scientist will be part of the Agroecology team who has significant expertise working with invertebrate pests on-farm and at the landscape-scale, devising new methods for more sustainable pest management, and enabling producers to reduce their reliance on chemical pesticides. This position will contribute to two new 5-year projects delivering impact to broad-acre grains and horticultural landscapes. The Research Scientist will develop foundational spatial platforms for agripest control combining a diversity of biophysical data streams and models. The application of this platform is in two different areas: firstly, to create a decision-making framework for canola landscapes across southern Australia, and secondly to inform risk assessments for current and exotic pests in horticultural landscapes in a New South Wales case study region.

Postdoc Fellowship, Spatial tools for deployment of mass-produced biocontrol agents (3 years)

This fellow will work closely with scientists and technical staff within the Agroecology team to develop and test spatial tools for the optimized deployment of mass-produced biological control agents in canola production landscapes. This work is part of a large 5 year multi-organisational project to enable improved management of beneficials (predators and parasitic wasps) in canola production landscapes. Ultimately this research output could develop into a tool to assist growers with area wide management and active management of beneficials. However, the fellow will be responsible for the first step of developing the underlying spatial simulation model and testing this with our collaborators. The fellow will work with the broader team and the biological supplies industry to formulate scenarios, conduct a limited number of research deployments to test the models, and work with interested growers to test deployment on-farm.
